For most people coming over on the ferry from Bodrum or Turgutreis, Kos Town is the best place to stay: the boat docks right beside the old town and Neratzia Castle, and you can walk from the quay to a dozen hotels with your bag. If you want a beach holiday rather than a town break, Lambi is the easiest step up, a short ride north, while Tigaki and Marmari have the island’s best sandy beaches about 10–15 km west.

We haven’t stayed at these hotels ourselves; we picked them on location, published details and guest ratings.

If you still need to sort out the crossing, start with our Bodrum to Kos ferry guide. For other crossings from the Turkish coast, see all routes.

Short answer

Areas

Area Good for Distance from Kos Town harbour (where Turkish ferries arrive) Vibe
Kos Town First-timers, short stays, no car 0–1.5 km, walking distance Busy, historic, lots of restaurants and bars
Lambi Beach stays close to town, couples About 2–4 km north Long town beach, beach bars, quieter at the far end
Psalidi Big resorts, families, watersports About 3–6 km south-east Pebble beach, large hotels, cycle path to town
Tigaki Sandy beach, families About 10–12 km west Relaxed resort village, tavernas
Marmari Quieter sandy beach, families and couples About 15 km west Small resort, dunes, all-inclusive hotels
Kefalos Remote beaches, longer stays with a car About 40 km south-west Hillside village above a wide bay

Kos Town

The ferry from Turkey docks at the town harbour, right next to Neratzia Castle, and the old town, market and cafés are a 5–10 minute walk from the quays. Hotels are spread along the harbour, the seafront south of the castle (Vasileos Georgiou street) and the grid of streets behind. You can see the main sights on foot, and the urban and island bus stations are both within walking distance.

The trade-off is noise and a lack of big beaches. The streets north of the harbour are the liveliest, with bars open late; the seafront south of the castle is calmer. Kos Town suits anyone staying one to three nights, arriving without a car, or wanting restaurants and nightlife within walking distance.

Lambi

Lambi (Lampi) is essentially the continuation of the town beach to the north, linked to the centre by a flat cycle path. The beach is long and mixed sand and pebble. The part nearest town has beach bars; further north you find larger resorts and several adults-only hotels set back from the sand.

You will need a bike, a city bus or a short taxi ride to get into town in the evening, and some hotels at the far end feel separate from Kos Town. Lambi suits couples and anyone who wants a beach-first stay without moving far from the ferry.

Psalidi

Psalidi lies south-east of town along the coast road towards Agios Fokas. It is a strip of large resort hotels on a long pebble beach, with watersports and dive centres. The cycle path runs past the marina into town, and city buses serve the coast as far as Agios Fokas and the Therma hot springs.

There is very little village life here: most guests stay inside their resort. It works well for families who want pools, kids’ clubs and an all-inclusive option while staying within a short taxi ride of the port.

Tigaki

Tigaki (Tingaki) is the first main resort along the north coast, about 10 km west of Kos Town. Its beach is wide, soft and pale, and the village behind it is relaxed rather than lively, with tavernas and small shops. KTEL island buses run from Kos Town, and in summer a tourist train connects the two.

It is too far to pop back into town on foot, and the north coast can be windy. Tigaki is a good fit for families and anyone who cares more about sand than sightseeing.

Marmari

Marmari is about 4 km further west along the same coast. The beach is similar to Tigaki’s, backed by dunes and tamarisk trees, and the resort is smaller and quieter. Many hotels here are large all-inclusive complexes.

From the port it is a taxi or a bus ride with a change of pace: there is not much to do beyond the beach and your hotel. Choose Marmari for a quiet week with children or as a couple, not for a quick one-night stop.

Kefalos

Kefalos sits at the far south-western tip of the island, about 43 km from Kos Town. The village is on a hill above a wide bay with several beaches, including Kamari’s small harbour beach and Agios Stefanos with its ruined basilica.

The distance is the main drawback for ferry visitors: it is a long bus or taxi ride from the port, and you will want a car to explore. Kefalos is for people staying a week or more who want a slower pace and different beaches every day.

Practical tips

Arriving by ferry from Turkey

Ferries from Bodrum and Turgutreis arrive at Kos Town harbour, beside Neratzia Castle at the harbour entrance. Passport control is at the port. From the quay:

When to book

July and August are the busiest months, especially for family resorts in Tigaki, Marmari and Psalidi, so book those well ahead. For a one- or two-night stay in Kos Town outside peak season, a few days’ notice is usually enough. Check opening dates for beach resorts outside summer; Kos Aktis Art Hotel and Astron Hotel are both listed as open all year.

Best months

May, June and September are a good balance of warm sea and fewer crowds. July and August are hot and busy. Later in October, check that your hotel is still open and that the ferry is still running on your dates.

Car rental

You don’t need a car if you stay in Kos Town or Lambi. For Tigaki and Marmari a car is handy but optional thanks to the buses. For Kefalos, a car makes a real difference. Rental offices are near the port.

FAQ

Can I walk from the ferry to my hotel in Kos Town?

Yes, for most central hotels. The harbour sits next to the old town, and hotels such as Sonia Hotel & Suites and Astron Hotel are on the harbour itself. Seafront hotels south of the castle, such as Kos Aktis Art and Albergo Gelsomino, are around 600–650 m away.

Which area is best for one night in Kos?

Kos Town. You avoid transfers, can explore the castle and old town in the evening, and are back at the quay in minutes for the return ferry.

Where are the best sandy beaches near Kos Town?

The town beach runs north into Lambi and is the closest. For wide, soft sand, go to Tigaki or Marmari on the north coast, about 10–15 km away, or further to the beaches around Kefalos.

Is Kos good for families without a car?

Yes. Kos Town and Lambi are flat and walkable, with cycle paths, and resorts in Tigaki, Marmari and Psalidi are linked by bus. A family resort with a kids’ pool, like Zorbas Beach or Caravia Beach Hotel, means you won’t need to go far.

Is Psalidi or Lambi closer to the port?

Both are a short taxi ride. Lambi starts just north of the harbour; Psalidi begins south of the marina and stretches several kilometres towards Agios Fokas, so hotels at its far end are around 6 km away.
