The “12 Islands” boat trip is the standard day cruise from Fethiye harbour into the island-studded Gulf of Fethiye, with swim stops in sheltered coves and lunch cooked on board. The name is a label for the area, not a promise: current operator listings stop at four or five islands and bays on a normal day, and the captain picks them on the morning according to wind and sea.

Short answer

  • Where you go: the islands of the Gulf of Fethiye, inside the Fethiye-Göcek Special Environmental Protection Area. Tersane Island and the Yassıca islands are the names operators mention most often.
  • Not 12 stops: listings on GetYourGuide say three or four swim stops, “up to 4 islands” or a maximum of five bays and islands (as of October 2026). The route varies by boat and by weather.
  • Typical day: shared boats leave from Fethiye harbour in the morning and spend about six to seven hours at sea. Local rules set a minimum of six hours for a full-day tour with a meal.
  • Included: lunch on board on every listing we checked. Drinks are often extra, and several listings contradict themselves on this point, so bring cash.
  • Season: day boats are a summer business; one guidebook says they run daily from May to October. Check the operator calendar for spring and late-autumn dates.
  • Alternatives: the Göcek 12 Islands trip covers the western side of the same gulf from Göcek Marina, and the Ölüdeniz boat trip heads south to Butterfly Valley instead.

Which islands are the “12 Islands”?

The islands lie in the Fethiye-Göcek Special Environmental Protection Area, declared by Council of Ministers decision 88/13019 on 12 June 1988 and covering 805.37 km², according to the Turkish environment ministry. The ministry’s own fact sheet says the islands in the gulf are called the Twelve Islands and names Şövalye, Tersane, Kızıl Ada, Katrancı, the Delikli islands, Kızlan, Hacı Halil, Yassıca and Domuz. Some of these names cover small groups of islets, which is how the count reaches twelve.

No boat visits all of them in a day. Here is what you are most likely to see, based on operator listings and one hotel’s description of the trip:

Tersane Island

Named on almost every listing, often as the lunch or main stop. A hotel that runs its own gulet trip describes Tersane as a former Ottoman shipyard with the ruins of a village whose Greek Orthodox residents left in 1923, at the time of the population exchange. One listing mentions a church visit with a separate entry fee; ask your operator whether this applies.

The Yassıca islands

A cluster of low islets with shallow, clear water, listed as “Yassıca Islands” or “Flat Island” in English. The Göcek listing mentions wild rabbits here, and reviewers of Fethiye boats refer to a “Rabbit Island”.

Kızılada, Domuz and Katrancı

Kızılada (Red Island) sits close to Fethiye and, according to the same hotel description, has a lone lighthouse. Domuz (Pig Island) and Katrancı appear on some routes as swim stops. Zeytinli Ada, the largest of the Yassıca group, is privately owned and cannot be visited, the hotel notes.

Sea meadows and mooring buoys

The ministry fact sheet says boats visiting the bays have damaged the seabed, and that a mooring-buoy system has been installed since 2010 to protect the sea meadows. This is one reason boats tie up at fixed points rather than anchoring anywhere.

A typical day

Operators do not publish one fixed timetable, and start times on GetYourGuide appear only when you pick a date. The pattern below comes from the listings and local rules as of October 2026.

Time What happens
Morning, about 9:00–10:30 Hotel pickup if booked, or meet at a café or quay near Fethiye harbour
First 1–2 hours Cruise out past the near islands, first swim stop
Midday Lunch served on board at one of the swim stops
Afternoon Two or three more swim and snorkel stops, often including Tersane or Yassıca
Late afternoon Return to Fethiye harbour; some listings mention the sunset on the way back

A few points from the listings and reviews:

  • One listing says the boat spends about six to seven hours at sea and that changes to the start time or meeting point are sent a day ahead by WhatsApp or email. Give a phone number you actually check.
  • Reviewers report boats leaving later than the listed time and pickups running up to an hour late. Do not plan anything tight for the evening.
  • A guidebook gives about 10:00 to 18:00 for a standard day tour from Fethiye, but this is an older, undated figure.

What the local rules say

Fethiye’s District Marine Tourism Board publishes general rules for tour boats. Its 2023 decision says a full-day tour with a meal must last at least six hours from departure, that boats must stay more than 200 m from the shore except at their stops and at least 50 m from swimming areas, and that the captain must give a safety briefing at the start. Boats must also file a passenger list with the Coast Guard and display a price tariff approved by the provincial culture and tourism directorate. Crews are not allowed to tout for passengers in the street.

What is included

Every 12 Islands listing we checked includes lunch on board. Other details differ:

  • Lunch: described as Turkish dishes or a buffet. The Göcek listing offers fish, chicken or köfte with salads and a vegetarian plate.
  • Drinks: often sold at the boat bar. Two Fethiye listings put drinks under both “included” and “not included”, and one bans outside food and drinks. Confirm before you book.
  • Hotel transfer: optional on most listings, and only from certain areas. If your hotel is near the meeting point, you may be asked to walk.
  • Extras: snorkel gear rental, photos and video, and entry fees are typically extra.

Group boat or private gulet

Shared boat Private boat
Best for Couples, solo travellers, tight budgets Families, groups of friends
Route Set by the captain on the day Agreed with the operator
Pros Cheapest, lunch included, daily departures in season Your own pace and stops, quieter
Cons Fixed stops, can be busy, music on some boats Priced per boat

The local rules say that when a whole boat is chartered by a group or family, the programme is set by contract between operator and passengers, so agree the route, hours and what is included in writing. GetYourGuide lists a private Fethiye boat tour with barbecue and hotel transfer, but most 12 Islands products are shared boats.

If you prefer to book on the spot, a guidebook says you can simply turn up at the quayside for day tours and advises checking the boat before paying. Booking online gives you a fixed price and free cancellation on most listings; booking at the harbour lets you see the boat first.

Ölüdeniz and Butterfly Valley

The Ölüdeniz boats head the other way, along the coast south of Fethiye. The pirate-boat listing above stops at the Blue Cave, Butterfly Valley, St Nicholas Island and Cold Spring Bay. Tour boats are not allowed into the Ölüdeniz lagoon itself under the district rules. For Ölüdeniz, paragliding and the rest of the area, see the Fethiye travel guide.

Season

Day boats are a summer activity. One guidebook says day tours run daily from May to October; GetYourGuide listings show availability by date rather than naming a season, and the Göcek listing refers to a “summer schedule”. Outside high summer, check the calendar for your dates and ask whether the boat runs if numbers are low. All listings say the programme can change or be cancelled because of wind or sea conditions.

Practical tips

  • Sun: you are on the water for most of the day, with long stretches on deck. Bring a hat, sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen.
  • Cash: listings ask you to bring cash for drinks, ice cream, photos and entry fees.
  • Swimming: stops are in open coves without lifeguards. Swim only where the crew says, keep clear of the boat’s propeller and ladder area when the engine is running, and bring water shoes for rocky entries.
  • ID: the Göcek listing asks for a passport or ID card.
  • Seasickness: one Fethiye listing says it is not suitable for people prone to seasickness. Ask a pharmacist before the trip.
  • Who can join: one listing is not suitable for guests with mobility difficulties, the Göcek one not for pregnant women, and the Göcek and Ölüdeniz listings do not accept all-male groups.

How it differs from Kekova

The Kekova boat trip from Kaş is built around archaeology: you pass over the Sunken City, where swimming is not allowed, and climb to Simena castle. The 12 Islands trip is mostly about swimming in a wide, sheltered gulf, with Tersane’s ruins as the main cultural stop. Kekova runs from Kaş, much further east along the coast, so the two do not fit into one day; if you are touring the coast, do one from Fethiye and one from Kaş. Continuing to Greece from Kaş, see the Kaş to Kastellorizo ferry.

FAQ

Do you really visit 12 islands?

No. “12 Islands” refers to the island group in the Gulf of Fethiye. Current listings say three or four swim stops, up to four islands, or a maximum of five bays and islands on a normal day.

How long is the Fethiye 12 Islands boat trip?

Listings give six to eight hours including transfers, with about six to seven hours at sea. District rules set a minimum of six hours for a full-day tour with a meal.

Is lunch included?

Yes, on every listing we checked. Drinks are frequently extra, so bring cash and check the “includes” list.

Fethiye or Göcek: which 12 Islands trip is better?

Both cover the same protected gulf. Start from wherever you are staying: Fethiye boats leave from the town harbour, Göcek boats from Göcek Marina and reach the western bays sooner.

How do I get to Fethiye from Dalaman Airport?

The Muttaş airport bus, line 48-25, runs via Göcek to Fethiye bus station; the fare table lists 300 TL to Fethiye and 220 TL to Göcek (as of October 2026). See Dalaman Airport transfers.
