Yes, you can see Ephesus in a day from Samos, but the boat schedule decides almost everything. Most Kuşadası ferries are based in Turkey and leave Samos only in the evening, so you need one of the few morning departures from Samos, either from Vathy in high summer or on the tour boat from Pythagorio. An organised tour that bundles the boat, the bus and a guide is usually the easiest way to do it.

Short answer

  • Samos port: Vathy (Samos Town) for Tilos/Makri Travel’s Sea Star Samos, or Pythagorio for the morning tour boat sold by Rhenia Tours. Meander Travel’s boats leave Samos only in the evening.
  • Morning boats from Samos (as of October 2026): Vathy 09:30 daily from 15 May to 27 September 2026 (Tilos), back from Kuşadası at 17:00; Pythagorio around 07:45–08:00, back from Kuşadası at 17:00 (Rhenia Tours listings).
  • Crossing: about 75 minutes to or from Vathy (Tilos timetable) and about 1 hour 15 minutes to or from Pythagorio (Rhenia listing), weather permitting.
  • Kuşadası to Ephesus: about 17 km by road; minibus (dolmuş), taxi or tour bus.
  • Time on the ground: about five hours (Vathy boat) to seven hours (Pythagorio boat) in Turkey before you must be back at the port, enough for Ephesus and a meal, not much more.
  • Documents: you leave the Schengen area and come back the same day, so take your passport (or, for some EU citizens, an ID card). See our Turkey day trips hub.

Which boat from Samos?

There are two ports on Samos with sailings to Kuşadası: Vathy on the north-east coast and Pythagorio on the south-east coast. For a day trip, the direction matters. Most sailings on the operators’ timetables leave Kuşadası in the morning and Samos in the evening. That suits Turkish visitors heading to Samos, not holidaymakers on Samos heading to Ephesus.

Tilos / Makri Travel from Vathy

Tilos Travel’s own 2026 timetable lists the Sea Star Samos between Kuşadası and Vathy with a crossing time of about 75 minutes. In the peak period, 15 May to 27 September 2026, it sails twice a day, leaving Samos at 09:30 and 18:00 and Kuşadası at 08:15 and 17:00. That gives a day trip from Vathy: out at 09:30, back on the 17:00 from Kuşadası.

Outside that window the boat runs once a day, from Kuşadası in the morning and from Samos in the evening. From 28 September to 1 November 2026 it leaves Kuşadası at 08:15 and Samos at 17:30, so as of October 2026 it cannot be used for a same-day trip from Samos.

Meander Travel from Vathy and Pythagorio

Meander Travel’s 2026 timetable shows one sailing a day in each direction, leaving Kuşadası in the morning (09:15 to Vathy, 08:30 to Pythagorio) and Samos in the late afternoon or evening (17:00 or 18:00, depending on the dates). The Pythagorio service is listed until 18 October and the Vathy service until 1 November. This timing works for a day on Samos from Turkey, not for a day in Turkey from Samos. The introduction on Meander’s page mentions morning departures from Samos, but its timetable does not show any, so we could not confirm them.

The morning boat from Pythagorio

Rhenia Tours sells a same-day return boat ticket and a guided Ephesus tour from Samos on GetYourGuide. Both use a morning boat from Pythagorio: the ticket listing gives 08:00, the tour listing 07:45, with the return from Kuşadası at 17:00 and arrival back on Samos at around 18:15. The ticket listing says the crossing takes about 1 hour 15 minutes, depending on the weather. Ferryscanner lists the earliest departure from Pythagorio to Kuşadası at 08:00 and shows Aegean Shipping Company with three sailings a week on that route, but neither GetYourGuide nor Ferryscanner says which days the boat runs, and we could not find an operator timetable. Check availability for your date before you plan around it.

Clocks

Greece and Turkey are on the same time in summer. Turkey stays on UTC+3 all year, while Greece switches back to UTC+2 when daylight saving ends on 25 October 2026. From then on, Turkey is one hour ahead of Samos. The operator pages we checked do not say whether their times are local; assume local time at each port and confirm with the operator, especially in late October.

From Kuşadası port to Ephesus

Boats arrive at Ege Port, the port in the centre of Kuşadası. After Turkish passport control you are in town, about 17 km from Ephesus, roughly 25 minutes by road according to Turkey Travel Planner.

Option How it works Good for
Dolmuş (minibus) Leaves from Şevki Hasırcı Meydanı, a roundabout one block inland from the town hall (Belediye), about every 15–25 minutes in summer Cheapest; confirm with the driver where you will be dropped
Taxi From the centre; cash only in Turkish lira, according to Turkey Travel Planner Saving time; can drop you at the upper gate
Organised transfer Bus and guide arranged by the tour Least hassle on a tight schedule

Ephesus has two entrances about 2 km apart: the upper gate (also called the Magnesian Gate) on the south side and the lower gate on the north side near the main car park. Tours Around Turkey recommends entering at the upper gate and walking downhill, and notes that tour buses usually drop groups at the upper gate and collect them at the lower one. If you come by minibus, you may arrive at the lower end and walk uphill, which is hard work in summer. A taxi to the upper gate and a walk down solves that.

Ephesus essentials

Ephesus has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015. The listed property includes the Çukuriçi Mound, Ayasuluk Hill and the Graeco-Roman city, whose harbours moved several times as silt pushed the coastline west.

What to see

  • Library of Celsus: the best-known monument of the site, one of the Roman Imperial buildings uncovered by excavation, and the photo most visitors come for.
  • Great Theatre: the city’s large theatre, which UNESCO names alongside the library among the excavated Roman Imperial monuments.
  • Terrace Houses (Yamaç Evler): seven Roman houses on the slope of Mount Koressos, built in the 1st century AD, with mosaics, marble wall panels, frescoes and underfloor heating. UNESCO highlights Terrace House 2 as evidence of how the city’s elite lived.

Hours and tickets (as of October 2026)

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s museum site lists the ancient city as open every day from 08:00 to 18:00, with the ticket office closing at 17:45. The Terrace Houses are listed as a separate site with their own ticket office, open 09:00 to 17:00 (ticket office until 16:30). Plan for a separate ticket if you want to go inside.

The ministry pages we checked did not show admission prices, so check the current fees on muze.gov.tr before you go. The ministry also lists evening opening from Wednesday to Saturday, which does not help day-trippers who have to catch the 17:00 boat.

Selçuk extras: museum, temple and shrine

Selçuk is the town next to Ephesus. On a day from Samos you will rarely have time for more than one of these, and only by taxi or with a tour that includes them.

  • Ephesus Museum: in central Selçuk, open daily 08:30 to 17:30 with the ticket office closing at 17:00, as of October 2026. It displays finds from Ephesus, including the statues of Artemis with her bee-decorated belt.
  • Temple of Artemis: one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, just outside Selçuk. UNESCO notes that little of it survives; a single column assembled from fragments marks the spot.
  • House of the Virgin Mary: a pilgrimage chapel on Mount Koressos (Bülbüldağı), about 7 km from Ephesus. There is no realistic way to fit it into a DIY day without a taxi or car.

Sample timeline

Based on the Tilos peak timetable from Vathy (15 May to 27 September 2026) and the Rhenia Tours listings from Pythagorio. Times are local. Both operators’ listings ask you to be at the port an hour before departure.

Time DIY from Vathy (Tilos) Organised tour from Pythagorio
Early morning 08:30 at Vathy port Hotel pickup, then 07:45 boat
Morning 09:30 boat; about 10:45 arrive Kuşadası, passport control About 09:00 arrive Kuşadası; bus to Ephesus
Late morning Taxi or dolmuş to Ephesus Guided walk through Ephesus
Midday Ephesus, plus Terrace Houses if you have the energy Short shopping stop, lunch in Kuşadası
Afternoon Back in Kuşadası by about 15:30 Free time in the bazaar
16:00 At Ege Port for check-in and passport control At the port
17:00 Boat to Vathy Boat to Pythagorio
Evening About 18:15 back on Samos About 18:15 back on Samos

The DIY version gives you about three hours at Ephesus, which is enough for the main street and the Terrace Houses at a steady pace, but not for Selçuk as well. If the boat is late or the crossing is rough, there is little slack, so do not plan anything you cannot drop.

Heat and timing tips

  • Summer heat: the coast around Kuşadası has very hot, dry summers. On a day trip you reach Ephesus around midday, the worst time to be on the marble. Bring water, a hat and sun protection, and walk downhill from the upper gate.
  • Shoulder season: May, June and September are easier on foot. Remember that the Vathy morning boat stops after 27 September 2026.
  • Cash: carry some Turkish lira for taxis and minibuses.
  • Passport control: expect queues in both directions. Non-EU travellers are registered in the EU’s Entry/Exit System when they re-enter at Samos, which can add time, according to the UK government.
  • Weather: strong winds can delay or cancel sailings. Keep your evening on Samos flexible.

Passports and entry

This trip crosses an external Schengen border twice in one day. The rules depend on your nationality; our Turkey day trips from the Greek islands hub covers them in more detail.

  • UK citizens: visa-free in Turkey for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Your passport must be valid for at least 150 days after you arrive and have at least one blank page (gov.uk, as of October 2026).
  • EU citizens: some nationalities can enter Turkey with a national ID card; German citizens, for example, can use a passport or Personalausweis according to the German Foreign Office. Check your own government’s advice.
  • Tour and ticket conditions: the Rhenia Tours ticket listing asks for a passport or ID card valid for at least 150 days after the trip, does not accept digital IDs, and needs each passenger’s name, date of birth, nationality and document number in advance.
  • Other nationalities: check whether you need a Turkish visa, and whether your Schengen visa allows you to re-enter Greece.

Organised tour or do it yourself?

Organised tour: the boat, the transfer, the guide and (on the Rhenia tour) the Ephesus entrance fee and port tax are arranged for you, and the bus waits for you rather than the other way round. You lose flexibility and the itinerary includes a shopping stop. For most people on Samos, this is the simpler choice.

DIY: possible from Vathy in the peak season, and it can cost less if you are happy to use the minibus; compare the ferry fare plus entry fees with the tour price before booking. You choose your own pace and can add the Terrace Houses. The risk is all yours: if you miss the 17:00 boat, you may be stuck in Turkey overnight.

FAQ

Can I visit Ephesus in one day from Samos?

Yes, on a morning boat from Vathy (peak season) or Pythagorio, returning from Kuşadası at 17:00. You get roughly three hours at the site.

Which port on Samos should I use?

Vathy for the Tilos boat in summer, Pythagorio for the Rhenia Tours boat and tour. Meander Travel’s boats leave Samos only in the evening.

Can I do the trip in late October?

As of October 2026, the Tilos boat from Vathy no longer runs in the morning after 27 September. Check whether the Pythagorio boat operates on your date. Also note that Greece goes back to winter time on 25 October.

Are the Terrace Houses included in the Ephesus ticket?

The ministry lists them as a separate site with their own ticket office and hours, so expect to buy a separate ticket.

Do I need my passport?

Yes, or an accepted ID card for some EU citizens. You leave the Schengen area and return the same day.
