İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB) is the main gateway for four ferry towns: Çeşme for Chios, Kuşadası for Samos, and Ayvalık and Dikili for Lesvos. Çeşme and Kuşadası have direct Havaş airport buses; Ayvalık and Dikili do not, so you take a taxi, hire a car, book a transfer or change to an intercity bus in İzmir. Times and fares below come from the operators’ and the airport’s own websites, checked in October 2026.

Short answer

  • Çeşme: Havaş runs from the airport to Alaçatı and Çeşme bus station, about 100 minutes, 600 TL as of October 2026.
  • Kuşadası: Havaş runs via Selçuk to Kuşadası bus station, about 90 minutes, 600 TL as of October 2026. The İZBAN train to Selçuk (change at Tepeköy) plus a minibus is the cheaper alternative.
  • Ayvalık and Dikili: no Havaş service. Use a taxi, hire car or private transfer, or get to İzmir bus station and take an intercity bus.
  • Taxis: the airport publishes a fixed-price list, for example Kuşadası 3,800 TL and Çeşme 5,400 TL (list dated May 2026, still linked in October 2026).
  • Late arrivals: Havaş has night departures (02:00 to Kuşadası, 02:30 to Çeşme), and the car hire desks are open 24 hours. For Ayvalık and Dikili a taxi or pre-booked transfer is the only practical option at night.
  • Alternative airport for Ayvalık: Balıkesir Koca Seyit Airport (EDO) near Edremit is much closer, but has far fewer flights.

Getting out of the airport

ADB has separate domestic and international terminals. According to the airport, the Havaş buses leave from the exit of the arrivals floor at both terminals, and taxis wait at the arrivals exits too. The İZBAN commuter rail station is linked to the terminals: from international arrivals, follow the “Metro–İZBAN” signs and the moving walkway.

For İZBAN and the municipal ESHOT buses you need an İzmirim Kart. The airport lists where to buy and top it up: the İZBAN ticket office (daily 07:00–14:40 and 15:00–22:40) and several cafés in the arrivals and departures areas. Havaş tickets are sold separately. Havaş says it reads the name, ID number and gender of passengers on its intercity routes with a passport or ID scanner, so keep your passport to hand.

Çeşme (for the Chios ferry)

Distance: the airport taxi price list gives 100 km to Çeşme and 90 km to Alaçatı.

Havaş: as of October 2026, Havaş lists ten daily departures from the airport to Çeşme: 02:30, 06:30, 08:00, 10:00, 12:00, 14:00, 16:00, 18:00, 20:00 and 22:30. The bus takes the İzmir–Çeşme motorway and stops at Alaçatı Terminal (opposite the market area) before ending at Çeşme bus station. Havaş gives the journey as about 100 minutes and the fare as 600 TL, VAT included. Havaş also says its timetables are planned around flights and can change with the weather or flight cancellations, so check the times for your date on havas.net or call its contact centre.

From Çeşme bus station, take a taxi or a dolmuş to your hotel or to Ulusoy Port, where the Chios ferries leave.

Taxi: the airport’s price list gives 5,400 TL (or €105) to Çeşme and 4,850 TL (€95) to Alaçatı. More on this list below.

Crossing the same day? Ertürk Lines asks passengers to check in at Çeşme port 1.5 hours before departure. With morning sailings, that is hard to manage after a flight, so most people spend a night in Çeşme or Alaçatı first. Sailing times are in our Çeşme to Chios ferry guide, and the town itself is covered in the Çeşme travel guide.

Kuşadası (for the Samos ferry and Ephesus)

Distance: Global Ports Holding, which runs Kuşadası’s port, gives 64 km between the port and the airport. The taxi price list uses 70 km.

Havaş: as of October 2026, Havaş lists ten daily departures to Kuşadası: 02:00, 07:30, 09:30, 11:00, 13:00, 15:00, 17:00, 19:00, 21:00 and 23:30. The bus runs on the İzmir–Aydın motorway, stops in Selçuk (next to the state hospital, by Kuğulu Park) and ends at Kuşadası bus station. Journey time is about 90 minutes and the fare is 600 TL, VAT included.

İZBAN train plus minibus: İZBAN, İzmir’s commuter rail, has a station at the airport and runs south to Selçuk, the town next to Ephesus. In the timetable we checked (a weekday in October 2026) there were no direct trains from the airport to Selçuk: you ride to Tepeköy and change there.

  • Airport to Tepeköy: about 33 minutes, roughly every 26 minutes through the day, with the last trains leaving the airport just before midnight.
  • Tepeköy to Selçuk: about 26 minutes, 14 trains that day, the first at 06:40 and the last at 23:50.
  • Fare as of October 2026: İZBAN’s fare calculator gives 102.64 TL full fare from the airport to Selçuk (about 62 km). You need at least 122.16 TL on your card to board; the difference is released when you tap out at Selçuk.

From Selçuk, minibuses run to Kuşadası all day. Turkey Travel Planner puts the trip at about 20 km and 30 minutes, with departures roughly every 15–25 minutes, more often in summer. It is cheap but means two changes with luggage. If you want to visit Ephesus on the way, Selçuk is the place to stop; see Ephesus from Kuşadası for the site itself.

Taxi: 3,800 TL (€75) to Kuşadası and 3,600 TL (€70) to Selçuk centre on the airport list.

For the onward crossing see the Kuşadası to Samos ferry guide, and for the town the Kuşadası travel guide.

Ayvalık (for the Lesvos ferry)

Distance: the airport taxi price list gives 200 km to Ayvalık. GoTürkiye, the official tourism portal, gives about 178 km from the airport to Küçükköy, the village near Devil’s Table south of Ayvalık.

No Havaş: Havaş’s list of destinations from İzmir airport does not include Ayvalık or Dikili.

Bus via İzmir: first get to İzmir’s intercity bus station in Bornova. The airport lists ESHOT route 204, which runs between the airport and İzotaş (Bornova, metro and bus station); a taxi is quicker. Turkey Travel Planner names Çanakkale Truva Turizm as a company running north along the coast to Ayvalık, and ticket sites list several more. Ticket-site listings show journeys of roughly two to three hours. Some buses also stop at Altınova or the Ayvalık junction, so check where yours ends; the main stop is Ayvalık bus station.

Taxi: 10,200 TL (€200) on the airport list. For a group, a private transfer or hire car is worth comparing.

Alternative airport: Balıkesir Koca Seyit Airport (EDO) is near Edremit, north of Ayvalık. GoTürkiye puts it about 45 km from Küçükköy. Pegasus says shuttles and taxis run from the airport towards Ayvalık. Most of its flights are domestic; Wikipedia also lists seasonal flights from several German airports, so check with the airlines for your dates. If you are flying via Istanbul anyway, landing at Koca Seyit saves a long drive.

Ferry details are in our Ayvalık to Lesvos ferry guide, and the town in the Ayvalık travel guide.

Dikili (for the Lesvos ferry)

Distance: the İzmir Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism puts Dikili about 120 km north of İzmir city. The airport taxi list gives 150 km from the airport.

No Havaş: there is no airport bus to Dikili.

Bus via İzmir: as for Ayvalık, get to İzmir bus station first. Ticket sites list several companies between İzmir and Dikili, including İzmir Balıkesir Koop, with the shortest journey shown as 1 hour 35 minutes. Departures are less frequent than on the Ayvalık route, so book ahead and check which stop in Dikili the bus uses.

Taxi: 8,400 TL (€165) to Dikili on the airport list.

See the Dikili travel guide for the town and the Dikili to Lesvos ferry guide for sailings.

Airport taxis: how the fixed prices work

The airport’s taxi page links to a price list from the Airport Taxi Drivers Association (the file name dates it to 1 May 2026; it was still linked in October 2026). The list states that the taximeter must be switched on for every journey and that you may pay either the meter amount or the listed fare. The airport adds that İzmir taxi fares are an opening fee plus a per-kilometre charge.

Destination Distance on list Fare (TL) Fare (EUR)
Kuşadası 70 km 3,800 75
Selçuk centre 65 km 3,600 70
Alaçatı 90 km 4,850 95
Çeşme 100 km 5,400 105
Dikili 150 km 8,400 165
Ayvalık 200 km 10,200 200

Fares as of October 2026. Agree on the destination and on paying list price or meter before you set off. Wheelchair-accessible taxis need to be booked in advance, according to the airport.

Hire car and private transfers

Car hire: the airport says rental desks in the arrivals halls of both terminals are open 24 hours, with pick-up and drop-off on the ground floor of the domestic terminal’s multi-storey car park. Companies listed include Sixt, Europcar and Hertz as well as Turkish firms. A car makes most sense for Ayvalık and Dikili, which have no direct public transport from the airport. If you want to take the car on the ferry to Greece, ask the rental company before booking; many do not allow it. Our taking a car to the Greek islands guide explains the paperwork.

Private transfers: a pre-booked driver meets you at arrivals and takes you to your hotel. This is usually dearer than Havaş, but handy with children, lots of luggage or a late flight.

Late-night arrivals

If your flight lands late in the evening, what works depends on where you are heading.

  • Çeşme: the last evening Havaş leaves at 22:30, then nothing until 02:30. If you land in between, wait for the 02:30 bus, take a taxi or pre-book a transfer.
  • Kuşadası: the evening Havaş leaves at 21:00 and 23:30, followed by a 02:00 departure. The İZBAN route still works until late evening, but the last connection at Tepeköy is tight, and minibuses from Selçuk become infrequent at night.
  • Ayvalık and Dikili: intercity buses are few late at night and you would first need to cross İzmir to the bus station. A taxi, transfer or hire car is the realistic choice, or spend the night near the airport or in İzmir and travel on in the morning.

The airport notes that public transport in İzmir runs 24 hours; that refers to city buses, not to services out to the coast.

FAQ

Is there a Havaş bus from İzmir airport to Ayvalık or Dikili?

No. Havaş’s destinations from İzmir airport include Çeşme, Alaçatı and Kuşadası, but not Ayvalık or Dikili.

Can I take the train from İzmir airport to Ephesus?

Partly. İZBAN runs from the airport to Selçuk, with a change at Tepeköy in the weekday timetable we checked. From Selçuk bus station, Kuşadası minibuses pass the Ephesus entrance road after a few minutes, according to Turkey Travel Planner.

How much is a taxi from İzmir airport to Kuşadası?

The airport’s taxi price list gives 3,800 TL (€75) as of October 2026. You can also pay the meter amount if it is lower.

Can I fly in and catch a ferry to the Greek islands the same day?

Sometimes, but it is risky. Ferries leave in the morning and need check-in well before departure, so a night in the port town is usually safer.

Which airport is closer to Ayvalık?

Balıkesir Koca Seyit Airport near Edremit is far closer than İzmir, but has fewer international flights.
