For most visitors, the best place to stay in Ayvalık is the town centre and old town. The ferries to Lesvos leave from the passenger port right in the centre, the old Greek-era streets and seafront restaurants are on your doorstep, and you don’t need a car. If you are here for a longer beach holiday, Cunda (Alibey Island) is the better base for couples and Sarımsaklı for families.

We haven’t stayed at these hotels ourselves; we picked them on location, published details and guest ratings.

Short answer

  • Best area overall: Ayvalık town centre and old town. Walkable, full of restaurants, and the Lesvos ferry port is in the centre on Atatürk Bulvarı.
  • Night before an early ferry: Stay in the centre. You avoid relying on taxis or minibuses at dawn, and you can walk to the port from many central hotels.
  • Best for atmosphere and evenings out: Cunda. Stone mansions, a busy harbour and boutique hotels, about 7 km from Ayvalık centre by road.
  • Best for the beach and families: Sarımsaklı, about 7–8 km south of the centre, with a long Blue Flag sandy beach and hotels with pools.
  • Budget tip: Small guesthouses (pansiyon) in the centre are the cheapest option. July, August and Turkish public holidays fill up early, so book your room when you book the ferry.

Areas

Ayvalık is spread over a few distinct parts. Distances below are approximate and come from the hotels’ own listings.

Area Good for Distance from the Lesvos ferry port Vibe
Town centre and old town Night before the ferry, no car, short stays, history Port is in the centre; walk or a short taxi ride Lively, busy, narrow lanes and old Greek houses
Cunda (Alibey Island) Couples, food, evenings out About 7 km by road; taxi, minibus or car Stone houses, harbour restaurants, busy in summer
Sarımsaklı Families, beach holidays About 7–8 km; taxi, minibus or car Long sandy beach, resort strip
Küçükköy and Murat Reis Families, quiet, nature About 4 km from the centre (per hotel listing) Village feel, pine-covered peninsula, beachfront resort

Town centre and old town

The big advantage is the port. The passenger terminal for Lesvos (Ayvalık İskelesi, also called the Ayvalık border gate) sits on Atatürk Bulvarı in the town centre. Most central hotels are in the historic grid around the Pazar Yeri market area, the Hayrettin Paşa mosque and the seafront: converted Greek houses, a boutique hotel in a former soap factory and plain family-run guesthouses. You can eat by the water in the evening and walk to the ferry in the morning.

The downsides are noise and parking. The lanes are narrow, scooters are everywhere and the main road is busy; some hotels sit next to meyhanes (taverns) with live music. Few hotels have their own parking. There is no proper beach in the centre, so for swimming you head to Sarımsaklı or Cunda.

Cunda (Alibey Island)

Cunda is a small island linked to the mainland by a causeway. Behind its harbour are sloping lanes of restored stone mansions, the ruins of the Panaya church and the Lovers’ Hill (Aşıklar Tepesi) viewpoint, and the waterfront is lined with fish restaurants. Most boutique hotels are in the Mithatpaşa neighbourhood, a few minutes’ walk from the marina. Small beaches such as Kesebir are on the island too.

For the ferry, Cunda is one step removed: you need a taxi, minibus or your own car to reach the port. In summer, especially at weekends, it gets very crowded. It suits couples who want two or three nights of good food and a day trip to Lesvos.

Sarımsaklı

Sarımsaklı is the beach resort south of the town centre, known for its long sandy Blue Flag beach. The seafront is lined with hotels that have pools and private beach areas, often sold half board. For a family beach holiday it is the most convenient part of Ayvalık.

The trade-off is distance from both the old town and the ferry port, about 7–8 km. Dinner in Ayvalık or Cunda means a drive or a taxi. Many hotels are seasonal, and some close from late September until mid-May.

Küçükköy and Murat Reis

Küçükköy is a small village between the town centre and Sarımsaklı, with a former Greek village past and a Bosnian community. Its square has cafés, ceramic workshops and galleries, and in summer local food stalls. Next to it, the pine-covered Murat Reis peninsula has larger beachfront resorts and the Şeytan Sofrası (Devil’s Table) viewpoint.

You will need transport for the ferry, but it is a little closer than Sarımsaklı. There is almost no nightlife; this is a quiet base that works well for families.

Practical tips

Where the Lesvos ferry leaves from

Ferries to Lesvos (Mytilene) leave from Ayvalık’s passenger port, known as Ayvalık İskelesi or the Ayvalık border gate (Hudut Kapısı). It is in the town centre on Atatürk Bulvarı and has passport control, a waiting lounge, duty free and a café. From most central hotels you can walk or take a short taxi; with heavy bags and a hotel up a steep lane, a taxi is easier.

From Ayvalık’s bus station (otogar) a minibus or taxi to the port takes about 10–15 minutes. From Cunda, Sarımsaklı or Küçükköy, a taxi or your own car is the most reliable way to make a morning departure; if you plan to use a minibus, ask about times the day before. There is a paid municipal car park near the port, but it fills early on summer mornings.

Arrive at least 1 to 1.5 hours before departure for passport and customs checks, or follow the time your ferry company gives you. Operators, journey times and tickets are in our Ayvalık to Lesvos ferry guide.

Documents

Non-Turkish passport holders cross into the EU and Schengen area here, so bring the passport and any visa you need for Greece. Check the entry requirements for your nationality before you travel; your ferry company can tell you what it needs at check-in.

When to book

Cunda and Sarımsaklı are very busy in July, August and during Turkish public holidays, so book your hotel at the same time as your ferry. Central guesthouses often have only a few rooms and fill quickly. Some hotels in Sarımsaklı and Cunda are seasonal; if you travel outside summer, check the hotel is open.

Best months

Summer is the season for swimming. If you want fewer crowds, the start or end of the season can work, but remember that some hotels and services are seasonal. Cunda is especially busy at summer weekends. Küçükköy holds a Bosnian Hıdrellez festival every year on 4 May, when nearby rooms can fill up.

Do you need a car?

Not if you are staying in the centre for a night before the ferry; a car is more hassle there, and parking is paid and limited. If you are based in Cunda or Sarımsaklı and want to explore Şeytan Sofrası, Küçükköy and the beaches, a car makes life easier. Getting around by minibus is possible too: Cunda and Sarımsaklı are both served from Ayvalık.

FAQ

Where should I stay in Ayvalık the night before the Lesvos ferry?

In the town centre or old town. The passenger port is in the centre on Atatürk Bulvarı, so central options such as Orchis Hotel, Özel Otel or Otelia make the morning simple.

Can I stay on Cunda and still take the ferry to Lesvos?

Yes, but plan a taxi or car to the port in the morning. Cunda is about 7 km from Ayvalık centre by road. Small boats also run between Ayvalık and Cunda in summer, but they are seasonal and not something to count on for an early ferry.

Which area is best for families?

Sarımsaklı and Küçükköy/Murat Reis, with a long sandy beach, hotels with pools and family rooms. Several historic guesthouses in the centre, such as Kidalyo and Kidoni Macaron, do not accept young children, so check the child policy before you book.

Is there a beach in Ayvalık town?

Not a proper swimming beach in the centre. The nearest big beach is Sarımsaklı, about 7–8 km away, and Cunda has smaller beaches such as Kesebir.

Is there parking near the ferry port?

There is a paid municipal car park near the port, but it fills early on summer mornings. If you plan to leave your car in Ayvalık while you visit Lesvos on foot, ask your hotel about parking before you book.

Where should I stay on Lesvos?

For a short stay, in Mytilene town, where the ferry docks. See our guide to where to stay in Lesvos.
